got this book for my birthday in 2023.
just read the first chapter and am not loving it.
he’s trying to be overly poetic in every paragraph that just falls flat 8/10 times.
he doesn’t let the symbolism of his words speak for him. he just tells you everything.

the father is a coward and Dave turns to the lord for one last hope of mercy, to be killed by his mother quickly.
“… and deliver me from evil.”

I can’t even express into words how devastating it is for someone to have gone through everything this poor boy has gone through. I’m about to read the last chapter, I just wish for his life to get better beyond this.

she stabbed her son, and all the father could do was promise that he wouldn’t tell her that Dave told him, and he put the dishes away. he sat on the couch reading the newspaper as his son continued to bleed out doing the dishes.
Dave cleaned his wound, he looked after himself again. he willed not only his wound to heal, but willed himself to survive another night

sickening how a mother, a parent, could do that to her child. the father was there, letting it all happen, he tried to reason rather than stop. he stayed and than devolved into doing absolutely nothing, into giving up on Dave. she poisoned their child, starved him, beat him, yet there the father stood, watching. disgusting.

chapter three, why is she doing this to her child? what is going on in her brain to possess her to do this? she dislocated his arm, burned his arm, wanted to watch his whole body burn on the stove, and she only targets Dave now with the abuse. where did it all go wrong?

chapter 2, he talks about good memories, warm memories. they’re sad to read when you know how drastically everything changes. what happened? what made her change to do so many cruel things to a child?

I have been trying to get my hands on this book for months, I finally got it but had to finish another book first. I finished chapter one, the chapter where he is saved. I’ve always liked it when stories start from the ending. I’ve read little parts of the book from tiktok so I know a few things, but I cannot wait to continue reading. First chapter, you can only imagine what the teachers were feeling on that day

love it, definitely can see the underlying misogyny but I don’t think that should be the main reason people hate on this book so thoroughly.
too tired to keep reading, I will come back and write something better.

holden is such an interesting guy. i’m picking up this unreliable narrator vibe as you can’t really tell if he’s telling the truth or not. he likes to lie to almost everyone, who’s to say he won’t lie to the reader

He’s really funny, sue me. He is 16, I’m 18, and I still kinda view things the way he does in terms of ‘how the world works’. His thoughts while interacting with people are exactly what I think when I’m talking to people, especially teachers. We’ll see if things take a turn and if he’s the asshole everyone seems to make him out to be or if he’s just a teenage boy that isn’t socially connected

I just started it, this is my first time reading it. I really don’t know anything about it. so far I’m really liking it overall and how it’s a stream of consciousness writing.
I find him kinda funny and relatable at least right now. I’ll see if I come into the misogynistic themes that I only seem to hear about in regards to this book. it’s definitely literary fiction which I’m really looking forward too

I think chapter 27 is by far one of my favourite chapters of this book. so little yet so much happens. Calum is a kind man, a different man. the kind of father Mungo deserved to have, if life was kinder

end of chapter 24, oh my god. literally hyperventilating. what the hell. is he really? he can’t be right? this can’t be how it ends for them

I’m really interested to see if they end up together or if it just ends sad. chapter 24

god this is just straight depression.

“-don’t come on Saturday. Don’t come near me on Sunday or Monday or ever again. If you do that, I don’t want to know you.”
Mungo tasked with difficult decisions, such things for a 15 year old boy to worry about. 6 chapters left and I want to cry and puke due to the dread of what’s going to happen.

relationship troubles, James having to get a girlfriend, and something with the kiss with the girl happened

they’re really getting into their relationship, so cute

so depressing, mungo tried to do her a favour and punch the baby out if her but it didn’t work and she had to get an abortion anyways but mungo doesn’t know that and thinks he killed it

chapter 11, jeez, feel like i can barely breathe
