I know I said I like flawed characters but Effie Strait is possibly the most self-centred MC I've ever read about 😭 Her sister might have possibly been kidnapped/injured/killed on a mission and she's out there worrying about not being conscripted by colonizers...

I love how flawed and complex Effie is, so refreshing compared to all the Mary Sues in fantasy

These were very difficult chapters to get through. I feel like I've been punched in the gut.

We got some chapters from Vanna's POV and I love her already! Effie pleeeeease decolonise your mind pleeeeease

I laughed a little when Rasheed said that Laila's daughter was a warlord - he probably didn't mean it as a compliment like I thought it was!

Big reading day for me!

Really struggling through this book trying to keep track of all the hormones and pathways and neurotransmitters etc etc, but I wanted to push through for the chapter explaining the biochemistry behind depression.

I got this ARC off Netgalley because I was drawn to the description of Leviathans, which are floating beasts that spend the entirety of their lives in the sky. Reminds me so much of the anime Drifting Dragons!

I think this is going to be a good one 😁

The past 12 chapters have left me very stressed about how damaged my body might be after the accumulation of stress from 27 years of life.

Done with Part 2. Fariba doomed her daughter for the ghosts of her sons. If only they had left with Tariq's family.

It seems like we're getting chapters from Mariam's POV next. I was wondering how she was doing through Laila's chapters.

I know Fariba is grieving for her sons, but I can't help but resent her for how she lashes out at Hakim and neglects Laila.

Another booktok rec! Picked this up as I needed a lighter read that won't give me emotional damage like A Thousand Splendid Suns.

So far I'm quite disappointed in the writing - awkward prose and too much exposition. Hoping it gets better 🙏🏻

Done with part 1. Mariam is so kind, and so resilient. Grief does not justify Rasheed being an abusive POS.

This is one of those books that I need to read slowly, or else it will destroy me.
