It finally starts to pick up in book two, but man was the first book slow. It really should have been cut down. Though on page 532 Tengo, one of the main characters, thinks, “I’ve finally made it to the starting line.” I don’t know if that’s meant to be self-referential humor or not. But nearly halfway through the book it does seem like the plot is finally starting.

I took about 140 pages, or a fifth of the book, for the two seemingly disparate stories to start merging together. That is when the pacing starts to pick up after what I would call a slow start.
