Chapter 13 blew my mind. Introduced Jakob von Uexküll, an Estonian ethologist, and his theories of "umwelt" and "umgebung." He talked about humans' problem of being prisoners of own subjective experience and that we struggle to empathize with experiences and essences of other creatures, even other humans. I can't stop thinking of the possible applications of the knowledge in this chapter to my own life.

Amazing description of the cultural history surrounding the tiger/big cat relationship with humans. Almost as if there is a symbiotic relationship. This book definitely deviates from the main story arc to deliver background information but it's a good thing as Vaillant is skilled at research and report.

So far it's really good. I've heard great things about it and it's staying true to its reputation.
