As I know the story of book one already, the haunting mention of war throughout the initial chapters where you have no clue what’s happening outside their little bubble is so powerful.

Oh man I really appreciate the Aussie phrases and lingo a lot more than as a teen. It’s such a breath of fresh air!

‘Listening to the news,’ said Harry in a resigned voice. His aunt and uncle exchanged looks of outrage.
‘Listening to the news! Again?’
‘Well, it changes every day, you see,’ said Harry.

I think this is where everything turns down the dark road. The conversation with Sirius about Barty Crouch Snr is the turning point. And of course, the next chapter, the madness of Mr Crouch. Here comes the dark side. This is the point that really hooks me (don’t worry I am concerned for my soul too 😆)

I love when Hermione is banging on Hagrid’s door like a wild beast yelling at him to stop hiding and the way she immidiately falls dead quiet when Dumbledore is the one who opens it.

Something small hurtled towards him from the middle of the room, squealing, ‘Harry Potter, sir! Harry Potter!’
Next second all the wind had been knocked out of him as the squealing elf him hard in the midriff, hugging him so tightly he thought his ribs would break.
‘D-Dobby?’ Harry gasped.

This is the turning point of Rowlings writing. You can start to feel her build the story now. The first three generally started the same, even on the same date more or less. This one the depth comes.

‘I hope you’re well?’ said Percy pompously, shaking hands. It was rather like being introduced to the Mayor.
‘Very well, thanks -‘
‘Harry!’ said Fred, elbowing Percy out of the way and bowing deeply. ‘Simply splendid to see you, old boy -‘
‘Marvellous,’ said George pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry’s hand in turn. ‘Absolutely spiffing!’

Forgot to add this line that hurts my soft lil heart.

Start good. Feel I’ve spoiled it a tiny bit knowing he’s a vampire from the beginning but so far, enjoying it

A necessary evil reading this one. Least favourite of the series but who doesn’t love Dobby right?
