I'm enjoying this even more than I expected to!

I've received my answer about the licorice. "The chamber stank with [the macguffin's] evil, the liquorice smell, so rich and cloying it made us gag".

The author continually describes the strange, non-euclidean structures full of dead or dying abominations as having a strong smell of licorice. I wonder if he likes the smell (as I do) and places it as a strange smell for such revulsion, or abhors it and uses it fittingly.

Finally picking up again a bit.

Great magic system! Hopefully the female POV character will grow enough in importance or independence to help make up for what I expect to be a failure of the Bechdel test.

I couldn't put this book down last night. Ok, so I did. But only because I knew I'd be tired in the morning.
