I like how the book is broken up into different themes throughout Dominic’s life but it’s a little difficult to follow because it goes forward in time through on theme, then jumps back in time when beginning a new theme. Interesting and inspiring life lived by a man solely concerned with the salvation of souls and the glory of God.

Pretty good so far. It’s not a deep dive at all but it gives good food for thought—enough for a non-Catholic to chew on. It feels like a get the ball rolling kind of book. Arguments for the existence of God, basic Christian teachings, basic Catholic teachings so far. A good catechesis book, I wish I would’ve read this in high school. A good book to give to a family member or a friend who doesn’t get Catholics

Does anyone have any reading suggestions for the Franciscan intellectual tradition? Bonaventure, Scotus, Francis’ few writings, or anything else? I’ve heard Bonaventure and Scotus are nearly inaccessible. Taking recommendations!

A quick read so far, flows pretty naturally like a conversation (it’s a dialogue book so figures). But it doesn’t feel super forced. He addresses the fact that he’s the one writing the dialogue so he has all the power to answer the antagonist’s questions. But it feels very honest. This is the first book I’ve read by my fav apologist haha only seen his YouTube videos, but enjoying it so far. Makes ya think!

I’m so very angry at Mr. Wilde. I had serious reservations about reading him. I’m certain I was most likely his target audience and I’m certain he has elicited the exact reaction he desired out of me. After just being in Ireland and learning a bit about his life I’m sad. Before I say anything silly I’m going to keep reading. I surely hope a Catholic showed him charity before he died—I’m not optimistic):

A teen book about a girl, her brother and her brothers friend (who she is in love with) in the form of letters from each of them. It’s a pretty fun book but I’m very apprehensive cause it’s about a haunted house. So many ways this could go wrong 😂 but it’s entertaining at the least. Kind of weird that a book about a haunted house is required reading for my Spanish class though

I’m not sure if he did this intentionally but Tolkien has major a 1-2 Kings feel of a chapter mixed with the Pharaoh from the Exodus in Akallabêth. This man’s understanding of original sin, the ABSOLUTE need for grace and the requirement of cooperation with that grace is horrifyingly piercing. This book rips your heart out in a completely different manner than LOTR : no less powerful, perhaps just more subtle.

Of Túrin Turambar may be one of the saddest chapters of any book I’ve ever read. Don’t mess with dragons, you will never win. Trust not the words of a dragon. Ever.

“Great was the triumph of Morgoth, and his design was accomplished in a manner after his own heart; for Men took the lives of Men, and betrayed the Eldar, and fear and hatred were aroused among those that should have been united against him.”

Then Beren looking up beheld the eyes of Lúthien…Fear left him, and the pride of the eldest house of Men returned to him; and he said: ‘My fate, O King, led me hither, through perils such as few even of the Elves would dare. And here I have found what I sought not indeed, but finding I would posses for ever. For it is above all good and silver beyond all jewels, neither rock nor steel, not fires of Morgoth,

But Olwë answered, ‘we renounce no friendship. But it may be the part of a friend to rebuke a friend’s folly’

I can’t wait to look back on my reviews and be embarrassed by them later hahahaha! For now I will stick to how I feel about the books. I’ll give myself something to be embarrassed about in the future with an attitude of joy that will most probably repulse me later (:

Everything is turning out very satisfactorily. I’m nervous something bad is going to happen to ruin the happiness of the Bennett’s and my own hahahah. Don’t let me down Jane Austen!

Jane Austen has me on a rollercoaster of a story. Goodness gracious is this book interesting! I can’t tell if Mr. Darcy is just posturing—he’s definitely had my sympathy for at least a hundred pages. He could not have hit the nail more on the head, stark though his observations may have been. Jane is a saint, Elizabeth doesn’t know how she feels😂, and Mr. Bennett is a dunce, a bad father, and a bad husband

Ok the letter was a good one. Darcy has a strong sense of justice but a poor sense of compassion. I respect him more than I did before this chapter. Nice move not asking for sympathy but just giving the facts—it’s not an excuse it’s an explanation. Darcy is growing on me. Eliza must be on a rollercoaster of emotions ha

Mr. Darcy is so funny: confess your love of a woman while completely demeaning her and expect her to accept your marriage proposal; did he even think her response would be anything but what it was? He’s a jerk but at least he’s honest. He’s quite the lover boy! Jane seems like the most lovely woman in the world as well. The “err on the side of compassion” of always assuming the best of people is inspiring.

Mr. Bennet…you take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion for my poor nerves.”

“You mistake me, my dear. I have high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these last twenty years at least.”

I almost dropped the book and laughed out loud when I read that line. These people are funny characters I’m tellin ya.

This is a very interesting read. I don’t think I agree with everything Weigel argues for, but he makes compelling arguments. I would argue that all Catholics should read this book to get a better understanding of the Church—especially the Church in the small sliver of time in which we find ourselves now.
