‘I used to have one o’ those.’ Lamb tossed his own broken blade skittering across the floor and over the edge into nothingness.

‘The work of the Maker himself,’ said Waerdinur. ‘You should have kept it.’

‘Friend o’ mine stole it.’ Lamb stepped towards one of the anvils, fingers whitening as he wrapped them around a great iron bar that lay against it, tall as Shy was. ‘And everything else.’

The crowd had fallen eerily quiet, and Golden’s doubt turned to a sucking dread because he finally knew the old man’s name. ‘By the dead,’ he whispered, ‘it can’t be.’

Standing among my final friends in all the universe, I raised my sword and laughed.


“Earth!” I shouted, and hurled the word at the Shiomu Elusha, at Syriani Dorayaica and its court of devils.

“Kinsmen. Brothers. Lords. Welcome home. Welcome to this . . . holy place. How many generations has it been since so many were gathered here? Since we all were gathered here?”

“You will never be Cielcin, Lord Marlowe. You will
never serve Truth.” It raised its eyes to the red lamps hanging high above
and ceased to move, the frozen center of that tableau of animalistic feasting, the fixed center of a roiling social order. “And you will die. You. Your Empire. Your god. Everything.”

I was being dismissed

“This must be,” he said. “This must be. Remember?”

“It doesn’t matter!” the vayadan said, voice sounding in my suit
speakers. “We will have you in time. The Shiomu will have you in time.”

‘Wait. Think. Prepare.’ Lamb swallowed the last measure and bared his
teeth at the glass. ‘Then get bloody.’

‘You don’t know what I deserve.’ She slumped back on her elbows,
head sinking into her bony shoulders. ‘You don’t know what I’ve done.’

‘Can’t be worse than what you did to me last night.’

She didn’t laugh. She was looking past him, eyes focused far away.
‘When I was seventeen I killed a boy.’

Temple swallowed. ‘Well, yes, that is worse.’

“Ain’t you a clever little bastard?’ snarled Lamb, eyes burning and the veins suddenly popping from his thick neck. ‘Best be careful when you pull that mask off, fucker, you might not like what’s under there!”

‘I had my dreams of being a better man, once upon a time.’

‘What happened?’

Shivers stretched out beside the fire, boots up on his saddle, and started
to shake a blanket over himself. ‘I woke up’

“In a small voice, he said, “They say you are a prophet, Marlowe, but you’re blind if you can’t see this is the end.”

“Without having to be told I knew that here was the Scourge of Earth. The Prophet. The Aeta Ba-Aetane. The Shiomu. The Pale King. Syriani Dorayaica.”

“This is beyond me, Hadrian,” he said simply before adding, “Perhaps I was wrong. Perhaps you are not the same boy I knew on Delos.”

“Don’t you let us down,” she said. “You get your ass kicked, I’ll never let
you hear the end of it.”

“The whole galaxy won’t let me hear the end of it,” I said to her, and let
her go, and turning, I went out from shuttle and back to my guards, and
passed with them out from under the clouds and the flying towers . . . and into legend

We don’t know anything yet,”

“And when we do?” Valka asked. She tapped my fist with a finger, and I
relaxed my damaging grip. “What happens then?”

“Vengeance,” I said, and for once, Valka did not argue with me.

The sight reminded him of before The Fall. Before Fane and Eltoar had burned the world.
