Completed Part 1! It consists of Husserl's establishment of the "teleological-historical" problem which he seeks to amend via a reconception of philosophy as a whole—that is, through the widespread adoption of the phenomenological method. The problem might strike us today as obvious: it is that we have no grounds upon which to consider "reason" to be the ultimate authority on truth.

Done with The Revolt of Nature. Will have to reread the last few pages though.

I'm in the middle of The Revolt of Nature and am going to keep reading after posting this update. I just wanted to share this quote, which I need more time to mull over but that I resonated with:

"Those who are too weak to make a stand against reality have no choice but to obliterate themselves by identifying with it."

I sped through Conflicting Panaceas a bit more quickly than I would’ve liked. I’ll probably revisit its second half when I pick this up again.

Made it ~15 pages into Conflicting Panaceas. At this point Horkheimer has finally dropped the academese and has started speaking like a normal person. Hopefully this remains to be the case from hereon out.

Done with Chapter XI. Final stretch!!

I'll probably stop here today; I made a bit of headway into Chapter XI.

Im finally caught back up! I love this book.

I'm done with finals, so I can finally refocus myself on this. I went back and read chapter IX like I said I would, and am a few pages into chapter X. That's why I decreased my progress.

My readthrough of chapter X was a race against the clock. I didn't go back to read chapter IX like I said I would (I'm still intent on doing so).

"If nothing is left in Paradise of the innermost tragedy of the soul, what kind of life is left? Is there any greater joy than to recall grief in time of felicity? Does not the freed prisoner feel nostalgia for his prison? Does he not miss his former dreams of freedom?"

Got through chapter IX. I might have to reread it before moving on.

"Suffering is a spiritual matter and the most immediate revelation of consciousness, and it may be that our body was not given to us except as a means to suffering [...] The first cry of man, at birth, is when the air floods into his chest, limiting him, and it seems to say: 'You will have to breathe me in order to live!'"

Finished chapter 9 and read through chapters 10 and 11.

Read through the eighth chapter as well.

Read through the sixth and seventh chapters. The footnotes were either translated awfully, or with no regard for English syntax.

Got through what was left of the second chapter, and read through the third and fourth.

"To believe in God is to long for His existence, and, furthermore, to act as if God did exist; it is to live by this longing and to make it the inner wellspring of our action. This longing or hunger for divinity begets hope; hope begets faith, and faith and hope together beget charity. Out of this longing is born our sense of beauty, finality, goodness."

Done with Chapter VII. Beautiful! Beautiful!

Read through the author's introduction, Chapter 1, and ~3/4 of chapter 2.
