Achilles: "Very splendid are the promises of the High King. But what reason has he ever given me to trust his promises, that because of them I should put my life, which is the only life I have, and sweet to me, in black peril? I had rather run my ships down into the water and sail homeward on the morning tide than follow such a king as he!"

Black Ships Before Troy: The Story of The Iliad

Thematically the book is about the destruction of Russian religion by the enlightenment and the rise of nihilism and Communism in Russian culture. The story is about a family of brothers in a mid-19th Century Russian town. It is an amazing accomplishment of integrating an abstract theme to a plot.
