Katniss is trying to figure out the meaning of the Hanging Tree: “At the beginning, it sounds like a guy is trying to get his girlfriend to secretly meet up with him at midnight”

She’d be so gaged if she knew Lucy Gray (her distant relative) wrote that line and was supposed to meet snow there to escape into the woods … like girl

I love how district 13 aren’t the good guys either - they keep things from Katniss (like Peeta’s propo to make sure she knows who she’s working with). It’s also defining for Gale’s character that he kept Peeta’s warning from Katniss. He’s keeping her in the dark, and wether it’s bc he “loves” her and wants to keep Peeta out of it or wants to protect the rebellion, it’s messed up either way.

“See that? Fire is catching, and if we burn, you burn with us!” Is just so powerful and i love how it wasn’t scripted - it was just truly how Katniss feels

Also Gale and Katniss working together in district 8 to defy both the Captiol and D13 to protect the hospital was awesome. They both are lethal and really accomplished a lot. It’s interesting to wonder how they would have operated in the games together

“I’m afraid of loving you for our entire lives, and then having to say goodbye. I’m afraid of you dying, and the world feeling useless. I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep getting out of bed if you’re gone, and if we had kids, they have these horrible lives where their amazing mom is gone, and their dad can’t look at them.”

I am SUCH a sucker for “getting sick and getting nursed back to health” trope but the fact that he flew from Ohio to be with her?? Didn’t go to Sweden even tho he could?? Oh gosh I just love it

Poppy remembering all the detials/memories and Alex remembering none of it is so relatable. It sucks when something means so much to you and you remember it in vivid detial and the person you share that memory with just doesn’t care/remember.

Also why does Alex keep getting sick?? He’s supposed to be this gym shark yet he almost passes out and gets back spasms ??

Really liking it so far - big fan of dual time lines

Finnick tearing off his hospital gown, striking a pose, and asking katniss if he looks “distracting” makes me so happy aw

Also - i see how Gale is not as good as a person as Katniss about wanting revenge on Capitol people / the prep team, but seriously how can anyone blame him? His motive is so clear - he watched the captiol bomb his city and now he wants revenge. He def has flaws but I don’t hate him for it

“Killing an innocent person costs everything you are.” Peeta killed Brutus when him and Katniss were separated - I didn’t realize that. He is so defensive of Katniss it’s really heartbreaking he thinks she’s dead. Ugh I would really love to read this again for the first time without knowing how it ends

The distaste for district 13 is already happening - they view the survivors of the district 12 bombing as “breeding stock.” It’s interesting that Katniss blames them for the bombing: they manipulated her into being the face of the rebel plot and her city got punished for it.
Also - Gale saving 800 people is such a redeeming moment. They didn’t know district 13 was coming to save them which is so scary

I like that Christina gets an arc too and it’s not just a one dimensional best friend

This girl is so dramatic and I hate the miscommunication trope #sos

Seeing her break the arena beyond repair after reading sunrise on the reaping was so satisfying

Her comment about Finnick being possessive over the bread makes so much sense now, and I never realized it before - the rebels were communicating with them through the bread

All of these plot twists would have been so cool if I didn’t know they were coming

I finally understand why Katniss hung Seneca Crane in her training session - she wanted the game makers to know they weren’t safe from President Snow either

The themes of this book are a tad juvenile: sadie can’t tell her family she likes comedy writing because they expect her to be the responsible one? University clubs are losing funding cause they aren’t athletes (giving lemonade mouth)? Idk they aren’t relatable to me but I’m still having a fun time. I do like Sadie finding herself as she explores college but I wish it wasn’t so obvious

Needed a sweet pallet cleanser because Hunger Games got too depressing - this is super cute! I like the premise and banter so far

Reading the propaganda version of haymitch’s games is sickening. The perspective being first person rising into the arena has to be Lou Lou. 18 die in the bloodbath - poor Wyatt. “Even the scent of the flowers when inhaled too directly is deadly poisonous.” “ Haymitch has his own troubles in the woods where the fluffy golden squirrels turn out to be carnivorous an attack in packs.” NO AMPERT UGH

Victor refusing to share his findings of how to create life to protect people from self distraction is such a clever writing trick because Shelly didn’t need to come up with some scientific reasoning

It’s interesting that katniss is declaring she loves Gale and wants to stick around for the rebellion. She thinks she can’t love Peeta because that’s the Captiol’s design/future for her. I wonder if she didn’t feel pressured by the rebellion if she would accept for love her peeta sooner

I could recite this book like the back of my hand yet I am still on the edge of my seat

The boy from district 3 broke the arena by digging up those mines … I wonder if any rebellious factors were at play like with haymitch

Her name is billy black?? That’s jacob from twilight dad’s full legal name … lol

Omg so peeta was the one who made the final blow on the girl who made a fire on the first night. Wow I don’t think I really fully knew that
