Back in the twentieth century, they had established to everybody's satisfaction that 'I was just following orders' was an inadequate excuse for inhuman conduct . . . but what can you do when the orders come from deep down in that puppet master of the unconscious?

I must admit my bias: it would probably be hard for me not to like a book where Kurt Cobain is Death.
In HUNGER, the anorexic teen Lisbeth is chosen to take up the mantle of Famine and become one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
This series reminds me a bit of the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony.

The history and psychology behind the American edict to smile all the time no longer what crappy circumstances you're mired in. Fantastic if you want to know how and why you're in danger of being brainwashed.

So, all those sappy team-building exercises that admin has us do in the hopes of masking our fears of wage cuts and lay-off are actually descended from the positive thinking philosophy and an outgrowth of motivational speaking and the motivation industry. All the more reason to resent being forced to participate.

"Positive thinking" as a form of mental conditioning. Scary.

"Positive thinking" originated as a method to combat psychosomatic illnesses in Calvinists. It then spun off into the religion Christian Science and a method of acquiring wealth from which it further evolved into a branch of self-help philosophy as well as a mandatory state of mental conditioning for many modern companies, corporations, and employers.

If you don't lean left of center, Barbara Ehrenreich isn't someone you'd enjoy reading.
That said, I'm finding her observations and connections about the mainstream American insistence on "a positive outlook" often in glaring denial of reality (often with disastrous consequences that can result in blaming the victim) to be spot-on.

Rule change: both tributes from a district will win if they're the only two left alive. Up next: the bloodbath for necessary supplies at the banquet.

"Theseus & the Minotaur" meets Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" blended into futuristic, dystopian, reality television. I can't help picturing Catniss as Kat Von D from "LA Ink."
