the characters are so bland 😵‍💫i don't understand what's happening and truth be told i don't care much. I WANTED TO BUT THE CHARACTERS GAVE ME NOTHING TO WORK WITH, still not sure if the writing style either does a good job at concealing the monotonous approach to the story or if it EXPOSES IT🙂the folklore aspects are delicious but EXECUTED SO POORLY 😞

“She wondered if a girl could become a tree, no longer aging in mortal ways but by seasons. Could a girl become a wildflower patch, resurrected every spring and summer only to wilt and fade come the sting of frost? Could she become the foam of the sea that rolled over the coast for an eternity, or a flame that danced in a hearth? A winged being of the wind, sighing over the hills? ”

“You can know a person in totality—as they are revealed in the angle of light hitting your eyes, in a poem of photons and particles,in the particular wavelengths adjusted to your height, the contours of your nostrils, the private landscape of your synapses.Your mind makes a map of them and even barefoot and blindfolded, this terrain becomes a truth. And it is a truth. But only at an angle."

“I pictured my mother as she had once been—burning and bright—before she began to collapse. My mother had given me little of herself. Not her mouth or her height or her laugh, and I was terrified that of all the things she hadn’t passed down it would be this slow unrecognizableness that I inherited, like a vicious disease that would eat me from the inside out.”

“Time followed us to school every morning and afternoon. It sat on our shoulders while we dreamt of faeries, heard us sigh when we were lulled into sleep, traced where our knees touched across Indigo’s green bed, smelled our bones lengthening in the afternoons, and watched how as the years blurred and softened,so did we.”

“the entrance to another world craves that which cannot be traced. It wants the mouthy weight of a nickname no longer uttered, the soft-furred throat of the dreams that pad quietly after you from one year to the next.To belong to the Otherworld, you must not belong to yourself.”

“I understood that beauty has its own power. Beauty transformed. Its presence could coax ambrosia from sour fruit or take an ordinary, rained-upon sidewalk and dew it with diamonds. I wanted beauty to touch me, change me, declare me worthy of its notice.”
