Adversity impacts the way others see us by bringing people together like Sage and Len and impacts ourselves by wanting to find a companion that will be there for us in our time of need. When Len and sage were hiking together so that Len could get over her fear, Len thought to herself just how close they were questioning by saying if they were “real friends now, maybe even that deeper kind” (Carpenter 275).

Sage stood up for Len when Kayla was insulting Len as she was cleaning the mess. Sage invited Len to sit with Sage and her friends since Len doesn’t have any. But after Kayla did what she did Sage stood up for Len while going after her when Len ran off. Sage caught up to her wanting “to make an excuse for her friend” but she said how Kayla “was a jerk”(Carpenter 179) in order to cheer her her up.

When sage told Len about her heart condition she seemed really shocked since she told no one, other then her family,her bff and her coach. She didn’t tell anyone because she didn’t want people to pity her, but when Len heard, Sage “nodded, and her heart unclenched in what felt terribly similar to relief” (Carpenter 161).
