Had he moved into Casa Lampedusa with his mother, had he insisted on it, she might have survived that winter. She might have lived. But it would have taken something from him he could not spare, and left him desolate. Had she asked, and he refused, what he felt now would have been simpler. Instead what remained was a vague suspicion that he had failed her, that he might have acted differently.
