This section on “Christ descended into hell” does something phenomenal. This may be my favorite part of the book. Christ’s death fundamentally reorients death. While the article affirms that Christ died, Pope Benedict expands this to explain how Christ entered into our deepest loneliness — death — as to radically identify with us. Thus, the gates of Sheol are opened and death has lost its sting. Amazing.
