The author is attempting to rebuild a psychological profile based on observations recorded decades ago. This necessarily lends itself to a subjective, arguably doubtable, portrayal. We can't know this stuff for sure, so that leads me to feel a little distant from the author's conclusions. Yet, at the same time, the connections he's made are fascinating and illuminating, if ultimately hypothetical at this point.
