“During the carnival, amorality and immorality are condoned, and impurity and abjection are encouraged. Bakhtin argued that in the Middle Ages the carnival acted as a suspension of established order. While only temporary, it was a means by which to transgress the norms and regulations of official society, and hence an attempt to unhinge its rigid hierarchies (which kept the lower classes “in their place”).
