This book is extremely difficult for me to follow. I have decided to finish it and reread it sometime. I find myself horrified but unfortunately it validates other black writers stories of the generational trauma that black people go through or especially were towards the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

In the beginning I found it frustrating and meh, very disinterested sort of tone throughout the beginning but also very European and possibly misunderstood. There’s an aura of a love for finer things like royalty or elegance but also family is her guiding root. As I’m nearing the end part of me wonders if Melania could still be helpful. She has a more maternalistic, nurturing tone in the second part. She sees it.

A lot of this book while suspenseful, also fills me with dread reading it and makes me only want to read small bits at a time, thankful the worst hasn’t happened yet.
