Big Mama Thornton is best known for her single “Hound Dog” which spent roughly 13 weeks at number 1 on the billboard charts in the 1950’s. 3 years after she released the single, Elvis Presley released his cover of the song which shot him up to stardom. Janis Joplin is also known as pulling from Big Mama as an influence in terms of the vocal style.
