Between 1900 and 1920, Nandi women constituted the largest population of prostitutes in Nairobi. This was a result of raid by British that confiscated 80 percent of their cattle. The Nandi women got into prostitution to supplant income.
During the same period, nomadic communities formed bulk of prostitutes in Nairobi. This coincided with prolonged drought or animal disease (Rinderpest).
