Is it weird that quasi-academic essays on Lovecraftian fiction are my comfort read? Perhaps, but here we are.

I think I'm coming to appreciate this more. The novel is a meditation on evil, so the narrative is appropriately slower and more somber.

So far, I'm not enjoying it as much as Razorblade Tears or Blacktop Wasteland. It's less taught than those, with plenty of passages where it's going for literary or elegiac. It is growing for me, so I may come around on it.

I'm not really feeling this first short story, in which a journalist attempts to track down a missing artist who became obsessed with bringing a statue of Coatlique to life. As with the apocalyptic sect in The Cabin at the End of the World, this seems like the type of fanaticism that only occurs in horror stories.

Does it actually get scary at some point?

The story is intriguing but not really scary yet.

The opening is a bit like Borges meets South Park.
