One of the best and most approachable expositions of the covenant of works I’ve read. Insightful, clear, and well organized.

Excellent chapter on what a covenant is and its relationship to the kingdom of God. Felt like the section on Hebrews 9 was unnecessarily detailed and academic for a work of this scope. However, it was still enlightening and convincing.

Good discussion on the Sabbath. While I am unconvinced of the traditional Westminster position on the Sabbath, I find some of Frame’s points helpful.

The discussion of the regulative principle was a bit confusing and somewhat pedantic. I am in favor of the regulative principle in its traditional formulation. I think Frame’s broadening opens the door for things that I believe are in appropriate for Sunday worship.
His discussion of the third commandment, however, was enlightening and helpful.

Really thought provoking study in typology. Gets to the important issues between paedobaptists and credobaptists on these matters. Illuminated me personally on how antitypes are the reality that the type points to. The type and antitype are distinct.

The second commandment forbids the making of idols for worship, not necessarily pictures of God.

Good look at introductory considerations. His discussion on creation vs. covenant was particularly helpful. God enters into covenant relationship after creation.

Exposited the first commandment and applied it narrowly to exclusive covenant loyalty to God but broadly to any Luke warmness toward God. He also talked about modern issues of homosexuality, Christian education, and more.

Some minor quibbles on how the Ten Commandments function in God’s overall storyline.

Ethics according to the existential perspective. Virtues and motives (normative), our own regeneration (situational), and our own mind, will, and emotions all must be considered in ethics. Whether our specific actions are right or in evaluating moral judgments.

Ethics must be done in light of redemptive history and our ultimate goal of glorifying God.

The situational perspective and its bearing on ethics. Our genetic predispositions, disabilities, etc. must be considered in our ethical categories and decisions without denying God’s norms.

Discussed perseverance and preservation of the saints. Faith, assurance, and the Holy Spirit working to sanctify the believer.

Excellent section on the relationship between justification and sanctification. We become what we are declared to be.
