Consequently there can be no hope whatever for those communities that renounce the austere worship of truth for the idolatry of the intellect. Sophisms produce revolutions and sophists are succeeded by hangmen.

Luke Mohan is on page 80 of 272 of Why Catholics Can't Sing: Revised and Updated With New Grand Conclusions and Good Advice
Blended music for a liturgy might begin with a classic hymn; a favorite by the St. Louis Jesuits might come next; Catholic contemporary songs at Communion time; and then another classic hymn to send people home. Blending styles sounds like an astute compromise, but sometimes the contemporary enthusiasts hate this arrangement because "Churchy" music, presented well, always makes their items sound anemic by comparison.

I wonder if the great majority of Catholic laypeople sense [perhaps unconsciously] that the theology behind the music is confused at best, and to protect the orthodoxy of the Church they frequently refrain from singing.

Much of the grubbiness [of love] is clean dirt if only you will leave it in the garden and not keep sprinkling it over the library table.

There is always something they [the damned] insist on keeping even at the price of misery. There is always something they prefer to joy- that is, to reality.

The routine of adversity, the gradual decay of youthful loves and youthful hopes, the quiet despair (hardly felt as pain) of ever overcoming the chronic temptations with which we have again and again defeated them, the drabness which we create in their lives… all this provides admirable opportunities of wearing the soul out by attrition.

We want very much to make men treat Christianity as a means; preferably, of course, as a means to their own advancement.

I have great hopes that we shall learn in due time how to emotionalise and mythologise their science to such an extent that what is, in effect, a belief in us (though not under that name) will creep in while the human mind remains closed to belief in the Enemy. The ‘Life Force’, the worship of sex, and some aspects of Psychoanalysis, may here prove useful.
