The author, Sterling Niorth, of the book "Rascal" uses a combination of both direct and indirect characterization. If I had to pick one, I'd say the author used direct characterization (at least more often than indirect) overall. After introducing a character in the book, the author will tend to give a detailed-vivid description of the character and their appearance physically, their background, and much more.

They meet this mother raccoon with several kits, the mother running up the tree and the kits reamaining on the ground. Oscar gets the mother down, and the kits retreat all but one, which is the raccoon that sterling decides to keep with him in his household. Sterling learns Rascal is very intelligent.
