This is much more heady stuff than I expected, which is a good thing. I like philosophy, and a book on writing that is heavy on philosophy, real, academically rigorous philosophy, well, that's a great thing.

So, Strunk & White isn't the be-all and the end-all? :)

I'm about halfway through; it has been a pure pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

The notion of understanding sentences through structure, rather than with the application of grammar terms, is an interesting one to be sure. I might try Fish's game of imitating a sentence structure or two... This could be a great classroom activity also!

This book is one to savour. I love how he desires to teach the reader how to master the sentence. Thank you Stanley Fish.

"It may sound paradoxical, but verbal fluency is the product of hours spent writing about nothing, just as musical fluency is the product of hours spent repeating scales."

LOVE this book, I am drinking in every sentence of it! How lovely that a book that teaches to pay attention to the small but CORE units of speech and writing is excellent in every breath it takes!!!

"I love the great outdoors. I can smoke there." I made that up. If I analyze it in the style of Fish it would suck all the fun from the context, but the pure genius of my phrasing skill, the intricacies of implied meanings and aphoristic expectations might blind you.
