It almost seems a lost art form to write in such a rich, colourful, emotional, and poetic way. And the pleasure of experiencing this juxtaposed by the despair and misery and suffering in the story creates a tension that have enthralled readers in nearly a century. And, hopefully, will continue to do so for the centuries to come.

A classic in the Danish literary culture, and a milestone. It's a heavy book, not "literally" (pun intended) but the misery and agony are seething off the pages and that makes it an emotionally tough challenge to read. In addition, the language is dense and takes time to get through, but this is maybe the biggest experience of this book.
