I love the idea of this book, but I'm not liking the writing so far.

Could use a bit more subtlety, but I guess since she's a young girl, then teenager it works. Odd to think that the age when it all starts is Paige's current age.

"I spent lunchtime at the porcelain base of the drinking fountain...pouring rust and fluoride into my mouth, trying to erase my peanut-butter sandwich."
There's no doubt Bender's phrasery and language is wonderful. In the first scene I was literally in the room with Rose, but it's one of those books where it looks like it's a perfect family, but everyone's either depressed or dying. Or both.

Crap. The narrator is nine years old. I obviously didn't vet this book very well.

Being there was like having a good cry, the clearing of the air after weight has been held.

Many kids, it seemed, would find out that their parents were flawed, messed-up people later in life, and I didn't appreciate getting to know it all so strong and early.

This book is not what I expected. Not enough plot about the feelings is food.
