The beginning chapters were mostly review for me since I have a basic grasp of neuroanatomy and the pathways for reading. The second fifth of the book delved into some more esoteric theories about how our brains developed the ability to read. Interesting but it could have been more concise. Now, at halfway through the book we are finally getting to how/why reading disabilities emerge.

I had never thought about the mystery behind the human brain’s ability to read and the argument that this ability can not be evolutionary as the written language was only invented around 5400 years ago, which is far too young for a genome to be affected.

I’m reading this in German as an OnLeihe eBook from the Bücherhalle. It appeared on the list of recommended literature from Professor Villovich and Felix Bonge’s class on Type Design at the HAW.
