From 2000-2018 the number of German autoworkers rose, even white collar workers (engineering/design) grew 30-40% due to robust institutions & unions providing a check & guidance on automation. US tax policy also prioritizes tech spending (5%) vs labor (25%). Germany still had more than 2x the robot to worker ration of the U.S. which also saw a 25% reduction in blue collar automotive work in the same period.

The main thesis is tech improvements benefit those who implement them & most historic productivity gains = more worker extraction. eg Windmills exponentially improved productivity but broad gains constrained by church’s monoploy & legal power ie people tried to use them but stopped & churches could only be tried in religious courts. From 1100-1250 in France religious building construction took up 20% of the economy
