It's only fitting that such a highfalutin book end with a page (259) titled "References and Acknowledgments" to be followed by the "Epilogue" pages and the page (267) "Epilogue" to be followed by the list of references and acknowledgments.

Who'da thunk a book titled 'Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture' would turn out to be a polemic against, almost entirely, the Christian religion? Although Marvin Harris (a Jew?) penned this book almost 40 years ago, the attacks on Christianity have never been more virulent than they are today in the Year of our Lord, 2013.

For the past 46 pages author Marvin Harris has told me how stupid Christian missionaries were, and basically, how gulldarn stupid I am for believing in God and Jesus Christ. I've read these words often and occasionally have met the authors of such blasphemy, and found them to be some of the saddest people on the face of the planet, needing not my scorn, but my pity. My prayers.

"But as the growth of industrial capacity began to saturate the consumer market, the middle and lower classes had to be weaned away from their frugal habits. Advertising and mass media joined forces to induce the middle and lower classes to stop saving and to buy, consume, waste, destroy, or otherwise get rid of ever-larger quantities of goods and services."

"To insist along with some women's liberation leaders that women too can be trained to fight with hand weapons does not alter the picture. If any primitive group ever trained women rather than men as its military specialists, it made a big mistake. Such a group surely committed suicide because not a single authentic case is known from any quarter of the globe."

In this book published 39 years ago, Author Marvin Harris comes off as one of these jackasses claiming (w/o saying exactly) that our 'American Lifestyle' is "just too wasteful." Another one of these schmoes who wants everyone else to live in a hovel, eat road kill and curbside grasses, while of course, he's 'The Man in the High Castle.'
