Holy cow. This. THIS. Incredible, propulsive, straightforward, insightful. I also forgot about Polley's involvement in activism.

i’m already loving this book so much and i’m DEEPLY regretting that i didn’t talk to sarah when we were both in the tiff store earlier this year

Who needs sleep when I can stay up reading things that make me mad and sad and nostalgic?

I guess. I’m wondering why this was recommended by a friend. I had no idea, really, who Sarah Polley is but now kinda know. The observations on child acting and physical challenges are interesting. Now I’m more than 1/2 done, can this be over now?

I am struggling to get into this book so going to try something else for a bit and come back to it.

Just finished the first essay.
Might I just say that I believe I understand why it took her over 20 years to write it?
Looking forward to the next one... maybe with a bit of a break. 😅

After years in and out of the Canadian and American entertainment industry it has become my firm belief that children shouldn’t be in it on a professional level. If you’re a kid/tween who is talented: do community theatre; do the school play; take lessons/go to an arts school. But putting the burden of adult work on a child—no. It’s abusive. There’s no way around it. It causes trauma.

Incredibly touching and fascinating memoir of the actor and screenwriter.

reminds me vaguely of dodie’s book, secrets for the mad.

truly remarkable at how Polley can arrange a story of their abuse (one that their brain had completely left parts of behind, and only remembered the events when asking loved ones what they said had happened in the moment) in such a poetic way. the use of alice in wonderland quotes really brings everything together and adds much more.

So far, I stayed up late reading the first essay. Enthrallinggg

Polley's writing is 'chef's kiss' so fucking good. 😙👌

Just started this today and I can't put it down!

The second essay in this book, The Woman Who Stayed Silent, is so immensely powerful. It’s a recount of a sexual assault by Jian Ghomeshi. What’s really interesting about this essay is that it’s majorly about other women who came forward at the time, and Polley’s connection to these women and their memories.

pretty good already, so much complexity in her life at such a young age. i can already tell my heart will ache at the final pages

I think I am starting to have a thing for memories.
