“The African powers, child. The spirits. The loas. The orishas. The oldest ancestors. You will hear people from Haiti, Cuba, Brazil and so call them different names. Them is the ones who does carry we prayers to God Father, for he too busy to listen to every single one of we on earth talking at he all the time. And no matter what we call it, Santeria or Voudun (etc), we all doing the same thing. Serving the spirits."

Good so far, going to take my time with this one. Enamoured with the different dialects, especially the Caribbean ones as they remind me of my grandparents.

I have been slacking on my reading but we're getting there. Hopefully I get to finish this soon because it's been a really interesting read and to see the influence of the Caribbean in the city of Toronto

Still reading this for school, but I am so glad I have the chance to read this. It is very far from what I usually chose to read and it's just been so fun so far. It is a wonderful representation of Caribbean culture in the city of Toronto. Although, as I am not far into the book, I haven't seen any major plot lines or problems aside from the fact that Toronto is falling apart and one guy is trying to leave the city.

I already thought that Rudy is the worst, but Chapter 8 definitely seals that deal.

So far, this book is doing a good job of creating tension and ratcheting it up higher and higher.

In her head, she kept going over the litany of Tony's faults: he drank too much, he was lazy, he ran drugs for Rudy. But his smile made her feel like she was flying.
Personally I would have added to the list of his shortcomings the multiple attempted homicides he just confessed to, but hey - so long as his smile makes you fly 👌

I’m absolutely loving this! (Even if reading about a dystopian Toronto is a bit much given *gestures wildly at everything*).

Enjoying it very much, but also aware of it being Hopkinson’s first novel. There are moments in which it feels like she needs to over-explain things. Glad to be in her capable, imaginative, vivacious hands.
