Sophisticated sci fi fantasy blend. Though I'm always loathe to call something fantasy because the religion behind it isn't mine. Which is what this would amount to. The realization of gods through the use of the needle ends up being great. I read this awhile ago so my description isn't the best, but this is the kind of book that digs under our accepted definitions. I stick it in a similar place to Beloved for me.
