I left on 30% of this book. Really liked the characters , that are vividly drawn, and the novel handles grief, trauma, and reconciliation with sensitivity
The plot was not catchy

I’ve never read a book where a fig tree is one of the characters, until now of course.

The rotation between the two narrative annoy me, but interested to continue to see how the story goes on.

..Meanwhile, the second generation chose to suppress the past, both what they knew and did not know of it. In contrast, the third generation were eager to dig away and unearth silences.
How strange that in families scarred by wars, forced displacements and acts of brutality, it was the youngest who seemed to have the oldest memory.”

She was, however, troubled to observe deep rifts between family members of different ages. Way too often, the first generation of survivors, the ones who had suffered the most, kept their pain close to the surface, memories like splinters lodged under their skin, some protruding, others completely invisible to the eye.”

i feel like a tree being in love with a man would sound weird if anyone else wrote about it but she makes it make sense.
she narrates a teenager just as brilliantly as she narrates a fig tree

It is a weird feeling that this book is evoking in me. At first I thought I was not enjoying the book that much, but the fig tree chapter do make me reflect about nature. The other day I was driving and was thinking about the trees, whether they were seeing me and whether they were living a good life. I felt weird thinking about that, but weird in a good way, if that makes sense.

Mixed feelings at the moment. It's good, but I don't feel that urgency to get back to it that I do with books I"m really enjoying.
