Status Updates From The Netanyahus

This is a joyously and brilliantly crafted read! I am enjoying every moment!!!

So, we come to this mix where we have a sarcastic, bitter, overbearing & narcissistic Netanyahu (purportedly the father of the current PM of Israel) butting heads with the faculty at the college in NY that’s considering hiring him; much talk about the history of the Jews which made me feel I was reading Wanderings by Chaim Potok (very interesting); and they can’t get the Netanyahus out of their house. Oy.

There’s a dark academia event (thanks to Netanyahu’s first intrusion into the storyline) followed by a series of dark family relationships events. Then the spirit of Seinfeld returns. It’s good writing and, if you have an academic bent, you’ll find those parts interesting. Maybe you don’t have to have an academic bent. It’s part of the plot and the characters and you’ll like how it all fits.

It’s hilarious. Wait till you meet the in-laws. It’s satire and comedy and light academia all baked into one big kugel. It takes a bit to get into and to adjust to the author’s wry style. Say, a chapter. But after that, you’re on your way. It’s a family sitcom, really, and family is family no matter what culture or ethnicity - it’s easy to identify with this crew. I’m enjoying myself.

This audiobook was on sale from Chirp so I thought, maybe a Chaim Potok, maybe an Isaac Bashevis Singer. I didn’t realize it was actually about THE Netanyahus and was also something of a satire. It begins with wild, swirling klezmer music -I can dance to that! - which lets you know right away this is going to be something other than a straightforward, garden variety novel. So, nu, we shall see.
