Fantastic. I loved Emma Southon's Agrippina and I'm having a blast reading this even when the subject matter is super intense

Good so far; but why do Roman families name their kids the same name it’s driving me crazy.

Any book that calls Propertius a 'Reddit incel' has my heart. This is the best book I've ever had the honour of reading. <3

I promise I’m no prude, but I could do without the seemingly random instances of “fuck” and “shit”. It was a little funny in the first chapter, but it’s distracting later on.

“Imagine if your least favorite world leader just refused to stop being in charge when their term ended because they just didn’t want to….”
Yep, I can picture that clearly.
“…and that they also had an enormous personal army.”
At least that part’s imaginary.

The book is full of personality, in particular, emma southons personality. In a way it’s kind of only enjoyable if you genuinely love her type of dry humor. I absolutely love her storytelling, she knows what her audience wants (and especially what we don’t want), and knows exactly when and where to land a punchline. As someone who studied the classics it is a very refreshing revisitation of roman culture.
