Apparently Hadrian first came up with the idea of attempted homicide

The enslaved section and the gladiator sections probably should have been separated. I mean I get it but they are two very tonally different topics (The tone of course set by Southon)

This book is too glib for its subject matter.

Am I a middle-aged dad for enjoying this book? Or does the fact that it’s pink negate that fact?

my pitch of this book is that the author just referenced gretchen weiners from ‘mean girls’ like she’s a reputable Roman history (she is, imo)

I am really not smart enough to listen to a very heavy non-fiction book on Palestine while 40 year old white men shout at each other in my office as if they’re not sitting next to each other or on a literal phone call. So here I am, adding another book to my currently reading.

If you’re looking for a light book about Roman culture and how murder fits into it written by someone who will quote Mean Girls and say “sorry not sorry” by the gods this is the book for you

So, I don’t normally comment on non-fiction, but this bothered me enough to say something: comparing the Romans’ abhorrence of parricide to Adam Lanza was in really poor taste.

I love the sarcasm, though I could see it rubbing some people the wrong way.
