An incredibly necessary piece. Very bleak. Doesn't mesh well with the deluge of rain we've received today. I need to switch it up for the evening.

"Borders are not fixed or static lines; they are productive refined concurrently generated by and producing social relations of dominance."

I actually started reading this book in August, but forgot to add it to my goodreads. Still in the process of reading this over 6 months later. Difficult subject matter but important, so returning to it when I can. Fortress Europe and white European far-right ethno-nationalism (+ Ukrainian Azov Battalian now in the news) particularly salient. also there are 216 pages in my copy.

Harsha Walia is incredible. Every single sentence teaches me something new!!! She connects so many different topics in such a seamless and focused way. And the level of research she’s done is mind blowing! Can’t wait to finish

"The US provided six billion dollars’ worth of military aid and training to death squads to crush the communist, peasant, and Indigenous cadres of the FMLN."
This is the least brutal description of all the atrocities she recounts. It gives a hint of the brutality.

CN Racism; physical violence against children
"...was consistently attacked over the course of three decades by the anticommunist American Protective League and the white supremacist KKK operating in the state. In one incident, over one hundred vigilantes attacked three hundred IWW members and their families and submerged young children in cauldrons of boiling coffee."
Rage and disgust aren't strong enough.

Just received my copy from Haymarket Books and finished the forward. Should be interesting alongside The Wrong End of the Telescope, The State and Revolution, and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, which all deal with either Capitalism, Racism, or Immigration and Refugees, which this books also deals with.

this last chapter felt like the pieces were coming together. to see how the different systems exist and are learning from each other. also all the money that is put into incarcerated migrants instead of simply housing, such that suffering will always exist and those in power can continue to extract. horrible.

This last chapter (3) really did a good job of showing the evidence that connects neoliberalism with the climate crisis. How extraction of labor and resources forced by "debt" and economy is causing huge land changes and displacing so many people. These climate refugees also are given zero to no rights to seek asylum and it's a bleak look at how the world is heading.

The 1st quarter reminds me of the activism folks talked about before 2001 criticizing USA's preemptive wars. Walia links those wars to border creation & control through ongoing colonialism.
The 2nd quarter discusses incarceration & detention. Migrants & refugees (which she mixes to remove racist definitions separating "good" & "bad" people) become modern slaves.
Environmental destruction, sexual assault, kid jails

probably mostly my fault but i think the frustrating thing about reading this is that each paragraph has enough stuff in it to be its own book but instead we get a ton of really intro walkthroughs and points that are too broad to ever really prove the point too well. idk learning a lot but definitely feels like a freshman survey class
