Scared of historical fiction cuz it’s quite often terrible, but it’s about my fave historical scandal so let’s goooooo

"She who steps away from the path of duty, who puts herself beyond the guidance of husband, father or brother, is lost to wickedness. You have acted of and for yourself, which is itself against the proper bounds of womanhood." Wrong then, wrong now. Still, it is chilling.

"While young, we strive for everything we want. Later, we clutch at what we have and hope to lose nothing." This is so very true.

I love this: "...I am blown about by the force of others' judgement. How stupid we are, not just women, but all people. We think we act with nobility when in truth we run in circles too low to the ground to see which path leads to heaven and which to hell."
