I really enjoy the level of style this author has. He uses other connections from previous lessons to tie new lessons together to make more sense. This quote on courage stuck out to me, "If cowardice can sometimes serve as an excuse, courage in and of itself retains its ethical aura even, it would seem, in a bastard."

It takes a me a bit to read this book because it is really densely packed of information, so frequently I have to reread parts and take notes to understand fully the extent of the material. This quote about temperance stuck out to me, "It is not the body that is insatiable. The limitlessness of desire, which condemns us to neediness, dissatisfaction, or unhappiness, is a disease of the imagination."

Even though most of the teachings in this book are common sense, it's a refresher to my mind, and taking notes about it helps me understand these teachings on a deeper level. Here's a quote on page 38 I liked, "Temperance is not a matter of refusing to enjoy ourselves or of enjoying ourselves as little as possible. That would not be virtue but sadness, not moderation but impotence, not temperance but asceticism."

I really enjoy the type of writing and morals the writer is insinuating when writing this text. He is able to tie in other virtues and previous topics to new topics he is currently writing about. This quote on page 31 stuck out to me. "What is the value of having absolute principles, if it is to the detriment of simple humanity, good sense, gentleness, and compassion?"

I really enjoy this book so far and it is really mind-opening. I really liked this quote on page 24, "What physicist rereads Newton? What philosopher does not reread Aristotle? Science progresses and forgets; philosophy ponders and recalls." I really like the author's style of writing, its really direct but also metaphorical, helping me interpret what the author is trying to tell me, on a different level.

I really am enjoying this book so far, and I am learning new vocabulary. This quote really stuck out to me, "Man is mind only through memory and he is human only through fidelity. I like his writing style because it isn't too hard to comprehend, but also at the same time, it is creative and entertaining.

This quote on page 2 really stuck out to me, "The virtue of a thing or being is what constitutes its value, in other words, its distinctive excellence." I'm excited to see what the rest of this book has to offer, and how I will be able to improve myself through its knowledge.
