so excited for this one! It's been on my want-to-read list for over two years, but for Christmas, my boyfriend bought this for me!

“I always think of my genderqueer identity as a one-person show. There is only one performer on stage but they transform into a range of characters and fully commit to each one in the moment. It’s defiant. It’s a concept that gives me room to feel at ease with all my moving parts. I also know that my engagement with gender isn’t fixed, so this fluid approach to understanding myself feels apt.”

There are so many more perspectives in this book than I expected. It’s very well written.

Her calm voice sharing her expertise is so refreshing. One point I hadn’t heard of before, “what if the government FORCED you to have an abortion?”- more ludicrous than the government forcing you to NOT have one? The issue is not a religious one and shouldn’t even be a political one - it’s about it safe health care. I can’t help but think about all the drugged addicted babies. What a shit start to life.

Very insightful and affirming of reproductive care. This is a book that explores gender, reproduction, and medicine all from an interdisciplinary and human perspective.

This is a powerful read. It exposes the truth about abortion care from the perspective of a health care professional, and from perspectives of those who have received abortions. It also shows the diversity and complexity of humanity, which is needed in this day and age. Highly recommend, so far!

A few chapters back I started to find it harder to get through the book. I think it is because it’s getting a little bit repetitive and because it is so (statistical) information dense. Nevertheless, the chapter I just finished, Maya’s chapter, was really good. I really like the aspect of her Indian culture and migration parents. It’s really interesting and intriguing.

I just finished the story of the partner of someone who had an abortion and I think it’s very interesting. It really makes you think about what the role of the partner, specifically the men, is in abortion.
Just like with sexism, we really need men in the fight too in order to achieve change.

I just learned about the organizations ‘Women on Waves’ and ‘Aid Access’ and I think they are so clever!
Women on waves is an organization that provides abortions on a ship on international waters (which means, no restrictions).
Aid access is an organization that sends pregnant people medication for a medications abortion and counsels them.
Both help people in restrictive countries get an abortion.

Alex's chapter really brought the most emotions out of me (up till now at least) because of their complicated relationship with their parents.

See the previous remark for the beginning of this comment! :)
Seeing how the book is about spreading awareness, I think the book should go a little more in-depth so that people who have different opinions or knowledge, can still get a chance to understand her statements.

I feel the book expects readers to have a certain foundational knowledge. E.g. in Alex's chapter, the author says that because people are not aware of gender being a social construct and fluid, there is unequal healthcare provision and comfort for a specific group of people. I think this is only straightforward and understandable if someone has the same opinion or knowledge.
See my next remark for the rest! :)

I'm done with the introduction now and I want to lock myself up in my room with this book so that all I can do is read, annotate, and tell my boyfriend about what I just read.
Especially now that I can start with the people's stories, I just want to keep reading. But I have exams so that will be something I can do tomorrow, unfortunately.

I really like how reflexive the author is. She also touches upon so many important things in the introduction and she has great statements (quotes to annotate).

I am annotating the shit out of this book and I am savoring every single sentence. I feel like, for the first time, I actually want the reading of a book to go slow so that I can soak up every word, every sentence of the book and really enjoy it and learn from it.
I'm only 9 pages in, but if it keeps going like this, it will be a 5 star read.

I have only read 4 pages and I already love it. You can really tell the author (doctor) has written this book with her heart and emotions.
