Just as you learn how to witness yourself consciously, the work is to consciously observe your loved ones and your bonds to them. (p. 47).

This emotional loneliness continues into adulthood when we repeat these patterns of emotional avoidance, shut down, and shaming (p. 46).

“You can’t eat better, stop drinking, love your partner, or improve yourself in any way until you become transparent to yourself. Because if you intuitively know what you need to do to change for the better- why don’t you do it? It’s not a moral failure; it’s because you’re stuck repeating these more or less automatic behavioral patterns.” (p. 28)

“Instead of listening to the body- after all, symptoms are it’s way of communicating with us- we seek to silence it.” (p. 9)

“The bias is evolutionarily hardwired. In the early days of our species, we were much more likely to survive if we focused on the things that could kill us rather than the things that made us happy. Just like the autonomic nervous system’s fight-or-flight response, the bias is built into our operating system at the physiological level and is largely out of our conscious control”

Underlining or highlighting something on nearly every page so yeah, it’s pretty good.

We are reading this book aloud to each other as we settle into bed each night. It will be a slow read.

I read about: mind-body healing practices; top down, bottom up, healing the gut (very interesting, I’ve been doing more research about this lately, mind blowing), healing sleep (besides this book I’m reading a book about why sleep is important, which is something I’ve been thinking about more as well). The holistic approach is a yes for me!

So far lots of useful information. So far it's been a lot about childhood conditioning/trauma. I see that it includes lots of (written) exercises. Next journal session will be interesting.

Chapter 3: A New Theory of Trauma might be one of the single most important things I’ve read in years! This is such a significant chapter and I encourage everyone to access it in order to truly understand where we come from and how we parent based on how we were parented.
