Really good so far! Might read something else at the same time (gasp) because I want to take these chapters day by day

Reading for work and personal therapy because why not read 3 books at the same time?

There is an awakening going on right this moment. No longer do we need to accept the narrative of “faulty genes” as our fate. Emerging science tells us that the genes we inherit aren’t fixed; they are influenced by their environment, beginning in utero and continuing throughout our lives. The groundbreaking discovery of epigenetics tells a new story about our ability to change.

Learning to heal yourself—SelfHealing—is an act of self-empowerment. SelfHealing is not only possible, it is our reality as human beings, because no one outside of us can truly know what is best for each of us in our uniqueness.

I like this one. At first, I thought I wouldn’t, I’m not someone who really feels much connection to the idea of spirituality, but as I moved past my initial hesitation, I found myself in a book that mirrored and tied together a lot of the research I’ve been doing over the last few years into a format that was accessible and holistic. I think this would be a great place to start before going into more specifics

Sigh. This is the book I needed 4y ago. I've already read my way through her references. It's a nursery school primer for the mind-body connection, and I wish I hadn't fallen for the marketing on IG. I think she's doing good work, but she's a (fairly young / inexperienced) practitioner. She doesn't have anything new to add. But I hope this book brings new people to these concepts. It's just wasted on me.

This is what healing is about: developing choice and trust in the tools we use to truly live our impermanent life, no matter what may come.

Soothing is the preferred way to deal with discomfort … I benefit from moving my body. That means when I’m feeling challenged, I take a walk. I do the dishes. I get my body moving. When I try to ease my feelings by relaxing - reading a book or taking a bath - it actually puts me more on edge.

Emotional maturity allows us the opportunity to choose how to respond to the external world. This then helps us to travel back up the polyvagal ladder and return to the safe baseline of social engagement, where we feel safe and secure with ourselves and within our connections with others.

Your reality is valid because you’ve experienced it, not because someone or something has said so.

Distressing emotions often feel as though they last longer and are more intense than positive emotions are. Studies have even shown that during moments of emotional intensity, our sense of time is skewed - sometimes seemingly running faster and sometimes slowing down.

When you replay distressing thoughts, you active your nervous system response as if you’re experiencing the distressing event over and over. Your body can’t tell the difference between what was in the past and what is happening in the present - it’s all threatening.

When our needs aren’t being met or are being actively infringed upon, we cannot point a finger at another person and say, ‘you have to change’. A better question to ask is: what do I need to do to make sure that my needs are better met?

The ego views everything within the context of a rigid dichotomous: good vs bad or right vs wrong. It is staunchly attached to its opinions and believes that we are our opinions.
When we are in an egoic state, our beliefs and thoughts are who we are.

The ego, the great protector of the inner child, is the ‘I’ identity. Anything that follows the word ‘I’ is an extension of the ego: I’m smart. I’m boring. I’m sexy. I’m good. I’m bad. The ego is our sense of self, our personal identity, our self worth. The ego is a master storyteller, creating and maintaining narratives about who we believe we are. Ego is neither good or bad, it just is.

“You are an active participant in your own healing.” Only an hour into this audiobook and it is already exactly what I needed.
As a friend reminded me, true healing is not passive. It is work. And it is hard. But it is so worth it.
