The book has somehow gotten better. Portrayals have gotten more nuanced and less exoticised. The narrator even learned how to pronounce, "Maimonides," after butchering it several different ways in the first half of the book.

I'm listening to this as an audiobook, and it's seriously cringeworthy. The plot centers on an investigation of anti-Semitic incidents in 1890s London. The descriptions of Jews (and other ethnic groups) are full of exoticizing and othering. In the audiobook, common terms and names are mispronounced, which comes across as disrespectful.
