This turn of events makes it seem like Alain is Lavastine’s bastard child, which has me guessing that this, in fact, isn’t the case.

A third of the way through and I don't know that I'll continue. This book is absolutely stuffed with unnecessary words and tell rather than show, and it's difficult to read. I like the characters and the overall plot, but in my experience with word-stuffed novels the prose can carry me through - not in this case, as the prose is nothing to write home about. Might start Paksenarrion or a CS Friedman book instead.
