“But I did not trust calling her. I was afraid that if I called her, she would talk and it would be too hard for me to love her after that.”

Te amo más allá del sol, la luna y las estrellas, me decía siempre cuando era pequeña. Pero solo quiero que me ame aquí. Ahora. En la tierra

I have read the first three essays in this book and they have had me in tears, laughing, and contemplating my own relationships.

Just finished a story about a woman that lived in her husbands shadow all her life. Makes me think of all the women I know who don’t have any purpose for themselves besides serving their angry men.

This is spectacular . . .and interestingly, there's an essay by Brandon Taylor, and I just finished his Booker prize shortlisted book. Total coincidence.

My Mother's (Gate) Keeper: This essay was about the author coming to terms with her overbearing father's and constantly compromising mother's relationship, of which she doesn't understand. I kept waiting for the author to realize that The Thing her & her mother don't talk about is actually her mother, because they spend so much time talking about her father. This never happened, & therefore the essay ended boringly.

Prologue & titular essay: I'm loving the concept of this book; mother/child relationships are ones I'm highly fascinated with. Well, parental relationships in general. I wished for *more* out of the titular essay, I'm not sure what more but I was so surprised when it ended.

Возможно, мы все в такой момент чувствуем перед собой огромную зияющую пропасть, — когда наша мать совершенно не соотносится с тем, что, на наш взгляд, должно подразумевать понятие матери, и со всем тем, что это, по идее, должно бы нам давать

Another book that I pick up and have to force myself to put down so I can sleep! Not sure if all these books are enchanting or I just have a lot of time on my hands

Triggering and even cathartic if you’ve had or have a difficult relationship with your mother.

Carmen Maria Machado...your experience of moving home after college and living with your mother could not resemble mine more. Wow. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
