i only got to read around 20 pages in the bus on my way to uni and from the beginning i truly kept you in my mind because i thought you would really enjoy this book. then i reached page 8 and the word 'tenderness' was written on it. i guess it was meant to be <3

Whoa. My mother and I were close, but there were a lot of things we didn’t discuss. Important things. This book hit me. Right in the guy.

I found myself crying at various points of this essay, and relate to a lot of the experiences discussed. The ending of this essay hit me the most, where the writer puts the email of her mother telling her she’s proud of her and loves her for speaking about her childhood— even though her mother caused a lot of hurt. It gives me hope for finding my own sense of closure and healing too.

Taking a Deaf studies class on Deaf culture and history, this essay was particularly interesting to read. To read about the perspective from a child of a Deaf parent who was semi lingual, my heart goes out to the mother but also the child. It’s not easy for both parties, especially when living in a world where Deaf people are constantly misunderstood, ridiculed, and oppressed.

Lies make fools of the people we love. It’s a careful equation, protecting them at the cost of your betrayal.

I did feel part father, part husband. Maybe every daughter does. Or maybe just the ones who’s fathers have gone
