When she’d seen the heart she’d known exactly what she was looking at. Oh, she couldn’t have proven it, and as a scientist she was always careful about jumping to conclusions. But she knew what she saw.
Lol what?! This is comedy gold, she’s done NOTHING but make assumptions the whole book, she’s LITERALLY doing it in this sentence!!!

This is getting ridiculous, these characters make all sorts of assumptions constantly about the alien ship and its supposed crew, not ONCE have these scientists done anything remotely sciency like, I dunno, testing or observing!

... and she realized she’d made the stupidest mistake a pilot could make. She hadn’t bothered to secure herself before the manoeuvre. Alright, but having trained professionals doing stupid things for suspense is lazy writing imo.

Here’s another novel where the story is a combination of first person pov and recordings of various characters, and I find that the audio would have benefited greatly from a full cast recording, similar to Sleeping Giants. I love this writing format, but in audio it’s difficult to separate the various voices when they sound alike.

A little behind but trying to catch up on my buddy reads. Already liking how this pulls you straight into the story with no pre-ample or scene setting.

I am reading two books right now, this one and Horrorstor that have fictional locations called 'The Beehive'. That's so weird...

Fast mover. No time for characterization. Just as well. Finding it hard to concentrate on reading right now, so disposable stuff just seems best for now.

It started fairly well but now it's a lot of background, introducing characters who (I assume) will be the primary characters. There's also a kind of oral history to it. When a new character is introduced, he/she has italicized text to show that he/she is responding to a question from ??? someone. Not crazy about that. Mostly right now bored off my ass.

Well hopefully a typo or the narrator misspoke but a Hohmann transfer was called a “hoffman” transfer. Hope the science doesn’t go to s#%*. And if it does hope the story is good.

I'm only feeling indifferent about this... I don't know if it's me - book slump/not into the vibe - or if it's a story problem.

Yes. I'm still reading books. But lately I've also been falling asleep on the train. So there's that.

This book REALLY captures the terror of space exploration. Not in a crazy, over the top, alien invasion kind of way (at least not yet). More in a “space is HUGE and I am terrifyingly small and there is no up or down out here so my entire sense of reality is unhinged” kind of way.
