When it's a talk about poverty, Orwell is the man. He embraces the subject.

Stopping here. Quite an intense picture of early 20th century poverty-stricken European city life.

That's probably why George Orwell became a great writer. He had all those experiences that made him a strong person and gave him all those insights needed by a writer not only to be good but great.

Sad, poignant, funny at times. However, I have this impression that Orwell hates Jews. Not good. If this is true, the highest rating this book will get from me is 3 stars. I am now counting those anti-Semitic phrases. Then read his bio to be sure.

Time is fleeting and time to read even more so. Having read just over a quarter of the book I find myself empathizing with Orwell and his situation given the current economic climate and my own precarious financial situation. Orwell, as ever, is engaging and despite the dire circumstances manages to highlight the absurdity within the poverty.

A French cook will spit in the soup -- that is, if he's not going to drink it himself. He is an artist, but his arrt is not cleanliness. To a certain extent he is even dirty because he is an artist, for food, to look smart, needs dirty treatment.

Orwell offended me with: "I saw the force of the proverb 'Trust a snake before a Jew & a Jew before a Greek, but don't trust an Armenian.'"
